UN-LIKING INSTAGRAM

I've been having a bloody good moan about every single social media out there at the moment, it's like we were best buds and now we're sworn enemies - we just don't love each other anymore... On my Instagram I've been posting stories about this subject, I've even been tweeting about it, so it's probably time I actually wrote about it. Here goes nothing!

I've fallen out with social media, mostly Instagram, which feels strange because we've been attatched to the hip for a very long time. For a wannabe creator and picture-maker, an app where you can make pretty grids with your personal work on is the dream. Honestly, when I first came across it I knew it'd be love at first sight. Now, it's a whole different story.

So here's me about to sound low-key pathetic while I moan about engagement, tragic! As we all know, Instagram has changed a lot recently with it's algorithm and shadow-banning. Not sure what this all means? Let me break it down for you.

ALGORITHM -
noun
noun: algorithm; plural noun: algorithms
a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer.

In Instagram terms, this means that images and users with high engagement such as likes, comments, shares and views will rank higher on your feed. Which is my terms mean MY POSTS DO CRAP. I'm only small, so my posts have never received a lot of likes, but recently it's dropped increasingly. When you've only got a small following you don't expect all of the likes, but you do expect something. Last week I posted a photo I really liked, but it flopped so hard I had to take it down and sulk about it. This is what upsets me most. I, as a photographer, enjoy images and the ones I take. I take pride in my content and when no one else sees it or feels the same, that's really quite sad. I don't expect to 'break the internet' but I do expect Instagram to not hide my content from my followers. I need all the help I can get to grow myself as a creative, and not having this platform to support me anymore is devastating.

SHADOW BANNING -
Stealth banning (also called shadow banning, ghost banning or comment ghosting) is the act of blocking a user or their content from an online community such that the user does not realise that they have been banned.

Basically, our posts are starting to disappear and not become visible when using hashtags. Instagram responded to this by stating that
'When developing content, we recommend focusing on your business objective or goal rather than hashtags'. OK INSTGRAM let me try and build my business without the genuine help of a fucking hashtag. I personally don't see any issue with using this symbol, I often search for posts using it. To come back with that is a huge bite in the ass, and it's users didn't take it lightly.

I'm not over exaggerating when I say that every single day I see at least three people talk about this ongoing issue. My problem is that I'm trying so hard to produce work that I love, enjoy and want to share with my online community, but I'm not having the support or platform I need to do so.

I am not on a level where I have a huge following and this doesn't overly effect me, I'm attempting to grow myself and my personal brand at the moment, but I feel like it's not going anywhere. It does make me want to give up, but then I remember that yes it isn't about the likes and it is a little bit tragic to get emotional about it, but then I also remember that this is peoples careers and one day it could be mine. In reality, even these incredible creators are finding it a struggle because they're the ones being paid for their engagement, so actually they need the views more than me!

SHIRT - NASTY GAL | TROUSERS - H&M | RINGS - BLOODY MARY METAL

All in all, the whole thing is grinding on me. I never thought I'd be someone who cared about this, but all I want to do is succeed. On a recent programme titled 'Celebrity Hunted', Jamie Lang (Made in Chelsea) has a break down about not living his life to the full and caring too much about his Instagram likes, which completely shook me. It's so easy to feel self conscious online and I believe a lot of people related to this. Jamie, I'm with you!  We are the modern age, social media and an online presence is huge, so it's time our platforms had our backs again!

I have a little solution for this, and I like to think it'll help a tiny bit. I use Instagrams one decent tool which is the notification button, which means I turn on notifications for my favourite accounts. When they upload a new photo, I get told! So, I can constantly see what they post (and it doesn't get lost on my time line thanks to algorithm) and like the image. Simple. I'm still seeing my favourite content and their still getting my love.

I know I'm not the only one having a moment, so I wanted to write about it and almost get it off my chest. Also, if anyone wants to make a new platform I highly recommend it, hell if I had the brains to make an app I'd do it in a heart beat!

ROCKER JEWELS | 23.8.16

I recently did some shooting with my pal Chloe Upton who works for a dreamy company called Jewel Street, also known as 'the uk's no.1 designer jewellery website', super fancy! Jewel Street are a company that withhold a complete range of jewellery from across the globe in locations like Brazil, Hong Kong and Australia to name a few, pretty impressive don't you think? Their site is a portal of beautiful accessories that I long to own, I often have dozens of necklaces and rings that hang about on my body but nothing quite as exquisite as these. I've always said that jewellery is personal and the fact I've come across True Rocks excites me to no end. A lot of the time it's hard to walk into a shop and find a piece that isn't covered in diamonds in the shape of a butterfly (yeah, not my thing!), so finding a brand that creates the ultimate rocker pendants is music to my ears.

I look at their collection and envision inspiration taken from ladies like Alison Mosshart and Kelly Osborne. I could picture Alison swooshing her hair back and forth while the safety pin pendant swings carelessly from her neck, or Kelly making her all black outfits look even edgier with a gold guitar pick. It's a brand that I'm on board with and am dying to get a collection going, starting with the two necklaces I'm wearing. The first being my deep purple and rose gold pill pendant, which comes in various other colours like a beautiful emerald green or even solid metals. It's hard to decide which I like best so I'll take them all, cheers! Secondly, we have the large safety pin in yellow gold that you can buy in smaller sizes and also colours. These two pieces make a statement on their own and even more so together, if I lived in a pit of money I would have at least four dangling from my neck at all times.

As well as being spoilt rotten by being able to wear some of True Rocks unique pieces, I also had the pleasure of making my ear lobes look pretty with a pair of London Road earrings. It makes me feel dizzy when I think of having 9 carat gold and diamond encrusted stars in my ears but it was a magical experience that makes me want to start earning big time money so I can spend it all on pricey jewels. I agree when people say it's worth spending a great deal of money on your jewellery, I own a hefty amount of Bloody Mary Metal so I definitely need to expand my horizons with some other great brands that we have at our fingertips on websites like Jewel Street.

SLAYED | 14.8.16

This OOTD looks familiar, doesn't it? I really wasn't over exaggerating when I said me and Kieran dress similar, I pretty much have this exact outfit. We all know I own many pairs of leopard boots so that's a given, well, I also own a cheesy Slayer shirt too. This ones from H&M, who always seem to kill it when it comes to band merchandise. I've bought a few from their men's section before as they're super cheap and I can't always afford to keep my habit going with vintage tour t-shirts. So, they will do when it comes to increasing my collection because you really can't go wrong with £12, can you?

I'm terms of Slayer tee's, this one is pretty chill. Their album art is pretty dark as they are a thrash metal band after all, so, expect a lot of black and red when looking for their merchandise, unless you pop to H&M of course. It is quite hilarious that they've decided to make a white Slayer shirt without a hint of blood stained red, I personally think they'd hate it which makes it even better.

Kieran liked this one for it's long-line style which he is currently wearing a lot of. Everywhere seems to be pulling out all the stops with the Yeezy inspired tailoring of over sized basics. I also like it, it makes me think of skate wear that is easy to ride in and totally effortless. I'm sure Kayne doesn't skate, but maybe his inspiration is something along those kind of lines. Now, let's just image Kanye on a skateboard taking it really seriously in his Yeezy season 2 collection, golden!

TOMMY'S GIRL | 10.8.16

Tommy Hilfiger is an iconic ninties brand that everyone has heard of, he's pretty much a household name. He's loved by celebrities and teenagers across the globe and I can't help but love him myself as it brings back memories from 2007. It's not that when I was thirteen I was wearing his gear, it's that all of the people I looked up to wore it which made it iconic to me. You must remember Britney in those stupidly baggy Hilfiger dungarees?!

Although his brand is typically classed as sportwear it's been taken over by many of the stylish people that surround us, like Gigi Hadid and Suki Waterhouse, who have different styles but both wear it perfectly. I'm more of a Suki girl myself but I give credit to Gigi for styling her Hilfiger so damn well with her many denim alternatives.

I found this gem while rummaging through We Are Cow, you'd think it would of cost me an arm and a leg but it only cost me £25 which is phenomenal for vintage brands. Most of his product sells for way more than that in places like Urban Outfitters and Asos, so buying second hand is the way to go if you want to score some older brands for half the price.

As I'm feeling all sorts of nineties right now I kept it going with the rest of my look. I decided to wear my new Topshop 'Cain' jeans which fit well with that era. They're trying hard to be straight leg but can't resist reverting back to the skinny jean cut. These jeans are great if you're on the look out for a different style, they're high waisted so obviously flatter you in all the right places and have that retro vibe thanks to the washed out denim and slightly straight look. I barely wear blue jeans but I made an exception for these, that's how much I'm feeling them.

I couldn't seem to stray away from my comfort zone by bringing my baker boy hat forward a couple of decades with me. Ninities is cool and everything, but the sixties is where my heart is!

THE TROPICS | 10.7.16

Meet Kieran, my stupidly stylish better half. It's going to be hard not to spew out a shitload of compliments during this post (which will go straight to his head) but this guy really does ooze effortless rock 'n' roll style. He could give Miles Kane a run for his money, and as you can imagine, I love it. Dating someone who always looks good is annoying because he looks better than me a lot of the time but it could be worse, he could have no fashion sense whatsoever.

I struggle to believe that I've met a man who can give my shirt collection a run for its money. Granted, he's bought a lot more since knowing me, but it's still rather impressive. This one is a particular favourite of mine as I love a tacky Miami Vice-style tropical print. It's more subtle than one I'd go for but I've got to hand it to H&M! They've done well with their summer prints this season.

Kieran has toned down the wild print of his shirt with an all black ensemble of ultra skinny jeans and a blazer, which makes a great day-to-night look. You'll either see him wearing a blazer or a leather jacket, he's a creature of habit just like yours truly. To add a little more colour he's added a brown leather belt that looks beautifully vintage next to his what could be retro shirt.

I know what you're all thinking, 'this is an outfit that you would wear', and it really is. We are two peas in a pod who are probably going to be sharing wardrobes before much longer! I've managed to persuade him to team up and do some outfit shoots together as well as taking photos of him on his own, so expect to see this handsome face here on the regular. I'm most inspired by men and how they style themselves so featuring more of that on my blog only seemed fitting, don't you think?

PLAYING WITH ACCESSORIES | 7.7.16

Wearing a mundane outfit and adding ridiculous accessories makes getting dressed in the morning easy, but also a lot of fun. You don't have to think hard about if something matches, you can just stick to a plain pair of jeans and a basic t-shirt and let the accessories do the talking. For me, it's all about the sunglasses, which easily make summer one of my favourite seasons. Who doesn't like wearing a pair of shades to cover the lack of sleep from the night before? Not only do they hide a multitude of sins but they also look cool as heck. I have an impressive collection which grows every summer. It ranges from the classic perfectly-round John Lennon specs to a simple RayBan Wayfarer knock-off, but these ones are quite possibly my most outrageous pair yet...

I think, talk and embrace 70's styling on the regular, which is why these sunglasses are ruling my life at the moment. They can make some people look like a sleazy director of a dirty movie, but they're also a pair that would make Hunter S. Thompson proud.

As my outfit is a boring pair of jeans three sizes too big and a plain white t-shirt, I thought it was about time I re-worked one of my many leather jackets to make my lazy outfits cooler. I've been searching for pins online for some time, but found that the best ones ship from America - just like everything else I want in life. I did manage to find some quirky ones from Topshop which fill my badge shaped hole rather nicely though. I mean come on, how cute is the little tooth smiling away on my lapel? I couldn't say no to that! I have, of course, added the pin I bought from The Rolling Stones exhibition we went to in London a few weeks ago, which I've been meaning to find a place for ever since. Along with another one I found at a local vintage stall in St Nicholas' Market here in Bristol.

I don't think you can ever go wrong with a basic outfit, but making it a little more exciting with the help of a few daring accessories makes you feel like you made more of an effort, and like the 'three sizes too big' jeans were part of the eccentric look, in my case anyway.

AUGUST HAUL | 6.9.15

I've just uploaded my monthly haul! It's not the most exciting collection of items I've ever hauled but there you go. I've been a little quiet on the blogging front this week due to me not feeling too well, as you can tell from this video I have a stinking cold and because I'm pathetic I've been moping about in my PJ's on my sofa for the past few days - tragic. I have got a new outfit posting coming tomorrow though so I'll be back to my usual self soon!

Anyway, enjoy the haul and apologize again it's a little basic. Subscribe if you enjoyed and anything you need to know will be in the down-bar below!

SEVENTIES STREET | 27.8.15

As I was in Notting Hill on the weekend I obviously needed to take a few snaps in front of the beautiful town houses (thanks to Chloe for these photos by the way, you aren't that bad at it after all!) - much to the owners dismay. I can't resist those dreamy white walls and black fences which surround the million pound houses that I long to own, I'd be rude not too!

Top - Primark, jeans - Primark, boots - H&M, jacket - H&M, scarf - Primark, belt - Primark, jewellry - Topman and vintage

It was such a scorching day that half of this outfit wasn't worn for the majority of it, I can't exactly don a big fluffy cardigan in the humid streets of central London now can I? I am annoyed at myself for wearing head to toe black because I knew it was going to be hot, it always is in London especially when travelling about on a busy Saturday. I should of got my legs out, maybe even got a tan but what can you do? It's safe to say it was an uncomfortable day but still a good one at that.

I knew I'd be walking around the city all day so I wanted to wear something not too complex so I kept it simple with my all black ensemble of jeans and a tee while letting my accessories do the talking by layering up gold and silver necklaces under my 70's skinny scarf, a new favorite of mine. For the 100th time, I love the 70's vibes going around at the moment and skinny scarves are just the start of it. I've worn this thing so many times, not only around my neck but around my head Keith Richards stylie (as per usual) and also on my plain black bag to make it a little less boring and business like. It's the perfect accessory!

I can't end this post at that, I've got to mention this killer Bowie-esque jacket which is so mad and tacky that I personally think it's bloody fabulous. I'm in love with the colour of it too, purple is my all time favorite but I never wear it, to be honest I rarely wear bright colours or any colour in general so adding some purple shades to an all black attire mixes it up a bit and doesn't make me look like a do every other day of my life. Who knew I'd end up matching the pastel hues of Notting Hill as well? Good move Chloe, it's like you planned it!

EAGLE BOMBER | 17.8.15

My mind is blown at the fact it's taken me this long to wear this bomber, this totally amazing bomber. I bought it more than a month ago and kind of forgot about it until now, I am aware of how bad that is and I have given myself a well deserved slap on the wrist for it. You may have seen it in a haul video I did two months ago but since then it hasn't been worn despite how awesome I think it is. But having said that, today was in fact the day this beauty came out to play!
Top - Forever 21, jacket - H&M, shorts - Forever 21, boots - River Island, sunglasses - Matalan.

I thought it would look cool with some boho pieces like these tapestry shorts from Forever 21 as the jacket itself is quite native. I wanted to take that further and add some pattern and these shorts were a match made in heaven, the colours go perfect together and make a change from a pair of denim cut-offs. I'm so obsessed with Forever 21 and their selection of shorts that I've worked up quite the collection, these being my favorite so far so I just had to get some more wear out of them before the sun went down for another year!

I feel I haven't worn much pattern in a while so I went all out with a clash of leopard print for my booties, booties that I can't actually walk in without highly embarrassing myself and towering over any person that walks past... They do make my pins looks extra elongated and thin for once though which I am happy about. As much as I think these boots are killer (in more sense than one) I've got to be honest as I have only worn these once to a club and hated every moment of it - not just because I was in a club but because they made me stick out like a sore thumb in a small room full of drunken teenagers half my height. With that being said I am thinking of passing these on to someone with more heel experience so you may just see them pop up over on my eBay along with lot's of other bits and bobs so make sure you head there for some of my pre-loved goods!

PITTSBURGH

23RD APRIL 2015
OUTFITS
LISTENING TOO: LYNYRD SKYNYRD - FREE BIRD ♫ Tee - thifted, jacket - thirfted, jeans - Primark, hat - H&M (similar), bandana - Claire's Accessories, watch - Next.

I have never been to Pittsburgh, but I'm such a sucker for a cheesy Hard Rock Cafe tee! My dad used to wear a variety of them when I was younger, I remember him lending me one to use as a Pajama top when I went to stay with him for a weekend a few years back and loved it. Since then they've had an important place in my heart, which is supprising as I normally say a big 'HELL NO!' to tourist crap like I HEART LONDON postcards or European fridge magnets, but I can't help but love these.

When me and Dan went to Rome we had to make a venture to the one there, we vlogged about it - which feels like forever ago now, Dan had no facial hair and I had braces, yikes. As cheesy as it is, it's so much fun. The menus are epic and the atmosphere does indeed rock.

I actually found this shirt in a local charity store and the old school muscle tee shape made me need it. We did fight over it as we both have a guilty pleasure for Hard Rock Cafes now, so we've decided to share it, after all it is a man's top so I did feel bad for taking it from him. I just love the 90's cut off sleeves and the fact its super rare, maybe one day I will actually go to one in Pittsburgh and get an updated shirt.

Although I didn't need it for once I popped on my cropped denim jacket, which I also bought from the same charity store a while back. Another super 90's piece (can you tell I'm loving this era lately?) which probably was in fact from the 90's itself. A black denim jacket is an essential for me as it helps me to stray away from my leather jackets for a change.

I'm all about accessories at the moment, I seem to always have a bandana or a thin scarf tied around my neck. I love the way it looks especially with plain tees or band shirts which are my most worn pieces, it just adds a little extra to a plain outfit. I've also opted for a hat too, I'm definitely stuck in a rut with my clothing choices at the moment. Someone take my hat collection away from me before I get some serious hat hair permanently!

MOTEL SERIOUSLY DOES ROCK
#OOTD

17TH NOVEMBER 2014
LISTENING TO: JUNGLE - PLATOON ♫
Shirt dress - Motel Rocks, coat - H&M, socks - Primark, boots - M&S, necklace - Primark, bag - M&S

You guys know how much I love a plain white shirt, I've said time and time again how it's a wardrobe essential. So, the lovely people over at Motel have made all my shirt dreams come true with a dress, in the style of a shirt - amazing! It also comes in black which I will be adding to my online basket pronto due to how much I love this one. You can team it with a pair of jeans or even a pair of leggings if you're in it for the comfort. I chose to wear it with a pair of over the knee socks, which in this case don't pass my knees due to my height. I normally have to buy things 'thigh high' for them to even get close to over the knee. But, if you're an average height then these socks are great for if you still want to wear a summer dress but add an autumnal vibe then these Primark socks are perfect for that and with their stupidly cheap price tag they certainly tick all boxes.

Motel has some killer pieces in at the moment, some of my personal faves are of course this dress (black version), the Sia Strappy Maxi Dress in Floral Fever Plum, the Pearl Strapless Pleated Dress, and the Marla Maxi Skirt in Winter Rose. All of which are beaut! They have some great pieces for the festive season too featuring a hell of a lot of glitz and glam so make sure to check out their 'New In' section and have a look for yourself!
