SECOND-HAND SEPTEMBER

If you’re new here, you might not know that I’ve been 100% second-hand for an entire month. I’ve only bought from car boots sales, vintage stalls and charity shops for a whole thirty days and all I can say is positive things. I have gone on about it A LOT this past month, but when it’s something I’m passionate about it’s hard to stay quiet, especially when I do write about fashion over here on CJCARPENTER.CO.UK, I can’t help but mention my ban on fast fashion. Although I’ve already been at it for a month already, I know a lot of people are joining the forces and becoming more aware this September.

If you haven’t heard, it’s Second-Hand September - A pledge from Oxfam to help us think twice about spending. With some hard-core and very real facts, Oxfam has made it fairly easy to get on board. I’ve seen a lot of people I follow on Instagram going for it, sharing their finds and really getting into the spirit of things. On their website, they share tagged images of peoples finds, which is something I keep refreshing. So, if you’re getting involved be sure to pop a hashtag in their so we can all see and get inspired by your looks, simply add #SecondHandSeptember and get sharing!

A month has gone by and I haven’t regretted my decision to be sustainable one little bit. I’m already meat-free and try to recycle my way through life, but being that extra bit cautious of my carbon footprint has been something that has truly changed me as a person. I am now far more aware of what is going on with the world and how we can help reduce waste, even if it’s a very small amount. Being wary and actually giving a shit makes me feel like I’m helping the planet get to where it needs to be. I know it’s going to take a lot more than just me, but if we all try harder to reduce landfill and everything else negative that comes with throwaway fashion, then the world will be a far better place and our future will be brighter.

I know I won’t be the first person you’ve heard talk about Second-hand September, but it is something we all need to share, discuss and get involved with. For me, I’m not giving up. I’m continuing on my journey for as long as I can. My ideals and priorities have changed, my spending habits are no longer straining me and my love of fashion has come back in full force. I am thriving and so is my creative energy, wondering what rare vintage piece I’ll find next and what outfit I can pull together has helped get my blogging mojo back. Putting myself out there with retro looks (that are actually retro) and talking about the buzz of shopping second-hand is what I want to promote and what I love doing. I’ve found my niche, what gives me drive and keeps my soul happy. Since I can remember I have spent my time rummaging through charity shops, but these few years I’ve focused on what everyone else is doing and not myself. To be a blogger it feels like you have to have new-in pieces and shop the current trends, but that’s where I went wrong. Dressing for the majority wasn’t always what thrilled me, but finding that special vintage item was. Something clicked in my head and made me think about all of these points, it’s encouraged me, even more, to keep on being me whether or not it’s considered ‘instagrammable’ or ‘blogger-worthy’. I might not be able to share as much current stock from the high street with you, but at the end of the day - does it really matter? We have hundreds of other amazing bloggers who do shop new-season and will promote it if that’s your thing, but there needs to be more of us shouting about being sustainable. It’s good to be different, so spread the love and try your hand at #SecondHandSeptember even if it is just for one month, it’s small steps that will get us there! Shopping 100% second-hand or not buying anything at all isn’t an option, but being aware is what is so important!
