It’s been a while since I’ve worn something dark and moody, I’ve been embracing my more feminine and girly side with soft seventies hues and a whole lot of denim. Today, I’ve thrown it back to my rocker self and gone full-on leather and leopard - just like Saint Laurent taught me.
I’ve been inspired by the feminine side of rock and roll for some time now, finding the perfect balance between masculine cuts and feminine textures can be challenging, but it’s one challenge I love to take on. Wearing dark colours makes me feel a lot more boy-ish with my style, but I love an androgynous vibe to my looks and is something I do often when choosing what I wear. There’s something sexy about a woman not being afraid to explore that side of herself, and Saint Laurent have always been the ones to teach me how to nail it.
Leopard print is an obvious must-have when trying to smash the Laurent vibes. It’s rock and rolls finest print, and one that is daring for both sexes. We see it on the men during catwalk season, but it takes a confident one to wear it in real life. Of course, it’s a print from the seventies with rock legends in skin tight leggings and platform boots (I’m looking at you Mr Bolan) all with this iconic print on, but in the modern time, it’s become more of a staple for a woman’s wardrobe. We've seen the high-street obsess over it this season, it’s hard to get away from and is slowly losing its appeal for many. For me, it’ll always be the key to rock and roll style. Much like animal print, leather is a huge part of it, from jackets to pants through to accessories. It’s just another major part to nail the trend. In my case, it’s less of a trend and more of a lifestyle - my everyday evolves around the music and fashion of the era rock was born, so it comes into my everyday routine, even if my outfit doesn’t show it sometimes.
I’ve found my perfect balance with my style, taking inspiration from the likes of Kate Moss, Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hynde to name a few. They know how to mix it up and dress perfectly feminine with a little hint of frontman vibes. I’ve scored points in all three areas with this look, checking leopard print, leather and femininity off the list. I usually opt for jeans for my every day looks but wearing a mini skirt and my seventies go-go boots made for a nice change and it made me channel my inner Blondie!
I’ll always look to my music icons and fashion houses like Saint Laurent for my rock and roll inspiration. Every time there’s a fashion week or throw-back photography shows up on my Pinterest, a wave of grunge falls over me and I need to ditch colour and head straight for my prints and monochrome pieces!
